BAU activities, events, strategies and procedures to help eradicate poverty in Lebanon.

University Relevant Events

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), with generous contribution of the Government of Japan collaborated with Beirut Arab University (BAU) and The Ministry of Industry in Lebanon to establish two new vocational training centers for Electricity and Solar energy at the BAU – Tripoli campus.

The project aims to create economic opportunities and jobs in the construction sector for members of the host and refugee communities –especially vulnerable women and youth –since investment in skills development and innovation are crucial drivers of economic growth and development.

The project focuses on delivering training skills aligned with market needs and on serving the local communities in the North of Lebanon, especially vulnerable youth & women whose enrollment in the training is encouraged as part of this project.

Beneficiaries will learn new skills and acquire on the latest technologies and practices in the market in order to increase their chances of finding a job and achieve inclusive education.

President of Beirut Arab University Professor Amr Galal El-Adawi signed a five-year Memorandum of Understanding with Kiron Open Higher Education for Refugees – Lebanon Branch represented by its director Ms.

Lea Batal. The MoU aims to offer online- based educational courses for refugees and disadvantaged Lebanese. On the other hand, Kiron- in collaboration with BAU - will provide a platform for vulnerable population on which they can choose from already existing courses from variety of Higher Education Institutions.

It provides the refugees and disadvantaged citizens with appropriate higher education and offer them opportunities for education and a better life in the future.

With the aim of playing an important role in serving the local community in Bekaa, and seeking to improve the health and the social level, as well as the participation in awareness raising and development, the Research Center for Environment and Development and the Faculty of Medicine at Beirut Arab University, in cooperation with Dar Al Fatwa in Bekaa, organized the “Free Medical Clinic” event, held at Al Farouk, Saad Nayel Hospital, The clinic was inaugurated with the attendance of his Excellence, the Mufti of Zahlé and Bekaa, Sheikh Khalil Al Maiss, Sheikh Ghanoum Nesbeen, director of the hospital, as well as members of the hospital staff, including some nurses.

The inauguration was also attended by Dr. Safaa Baidoun, director of the Research Center for Environment and Development and a number of the team-members at the Center.

Sheikh Ghanoum welcomed the team of physicians, headed by Dr. Mohamed Houri, Assistant Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Beirut Arab University expressing his appreciation of this kind initiative, in particular since Bekaa is witnessing difficult living and humanitarian conditions.

The clinics were divided as follows:

  • Two pediatrics clinics: (Prof. Dr. Hala Asem, Dr. Nada Hashwa, Dr. Susan Khalil).

  • Two gynecological clinics :(Dr. Ghada Moussa, Dr. Heba Gebaly, Dr. Ahmed Chokor, Dr. Diaa Salloum).

  • One clinic of internal medicine: (Dr. Ali Samaha, Dr. Khaled El Agamy, Huzaifa Al Haj Ibrahim)

  • One nutrition clinic: (Specialist Rana Saleh).

The medical team examined the patients, providing them with available medication. The great number of visiting patients, exceeding about 250 cases (150 children, 55 internal medicine & cardio-vascular, 55 gynecological cases), stands proof to the heavy attendance of the public.

University/Strategy/Policy/Procedure

Beirut Arab University offers scholarship possibilities to women who wish to enter higher education, this with the purpose of providing greater schemes and tools to women for admission to the University. Below are the scholarships that BAU offers to women’s:

Merit scholarships are awarded to distinguished students to encourage academic excellence [9].The top three students in each of the four branches of the Lebanese Baccalaureate are granted an annual full cost scholarship.

Merit Scholarships - Eligibility Requirements

  • Submit the official Baccalaureate certificate approved by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education.

  • The scholarship is renewable every semester provided the student maintains a minimum SGPA of 3.5.

The top five students at each level of all undergraduate programs receive reductions on the tuition fees of the subsequent semester as follows:

  • A minimum SGPA of 3.5.

  • Having successfully passed all course(s) during the semester.

  • In the senior year, a minimum of 10 credit hours should be registered per semester.

BAU provides a comprehensive need-based financial aid that makes it financially possible for its students to pursue their studies. In this case, financial support is embodied in the reduction of tuition fees with varied percentages depending on the student’s financial status.

Eligibility Requirements

To be considered for a need-based financial aid, you should have fulfilled the following:

  • Registered a minimum of 12 credit hours during the fall semester.

  • Got a cumulative GPA greater or equal to 2.0.

  • Disbursed 50% of the Fall 2020-2021 tuition fees.

  • Haven’t benefitted from any siblings’ discounts, grants, or scholarships from BAU.

  • Haven’t benefitted from any external financial aid.

Documents Required

  • Family Civil Status Record.

  • Employment certificate of the provider’s job(s) (applicant, father, mother or guardian) which states the job title, years of service and the monthly salary.

  • If the provider is self-employed or business owner, a Self-income Statement should be submitted.

  • School statements or receipts of annual fees for each dependent child enrolled at a school or university.

  • A photocopy of any rental contract(s) and/or ownership of real estate.

  • A photocopy of car registration form(s) for every car owned by the family.

  • A photocopy of a loan agreement if applicable.

  • An academic transcript.

  • Any further documents that would support the application for a financial aid (e.g., medical reports, recent medical/hospitalization bills, certificate of job termination or end of service, etc.…).

Application Procedures

    • Students who meet the required conditions must submit the application via the university portal iConnect and present a copy of this application together with the required documents to the Faculty Executive Administrator according to the deadlines assigned.

    • The Financial Aid Committee examines all applications that meet the criteria, announces the students’ names, and sets interview dates.

    • Applicants who meet the required conditions will be interviewed by the committee to assess the applicants’ financial and social status. Applicants might expect a home inspection by a social worker, if deemed necessary by the committee.

    • Accepted applications are referred to the Financial Aid Committee who identifies the eligible applicants. The committee has the right to request any further information/documents if deemed necessary.

BAU offers scholarships for certain faculties to reward, encourage, and assist students in pursuing academic excellence in their fields of study.

New Students Scholarship (50% of Tuition Fees).

Newly admitted students in the programs below receive 50% off their tuition fees during their years of study.

    • Fashion Design at the faculty of Architecture – Design & Built Environment.

    • Arabic Language & Literature and the Mass Communication at the faculty of Human Sciences.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Any student accepted in any of these programs is eligible for the scholarship.

  • The scholarship is renewable every semester provided the student maintains a minimum SGPA of 2.

No application is required; the scholarship is automatically dispensed upon enrollment in any of the programs enlisted above.

New Students Scholarship (Up to 20% of Tuition Fees)

Newly admitted students at the Faculties of Science, Law & Political Science, Business Administration and Human Sciences (English Language & Literature, Psychology) are granted a discount on the tuition fees of the first semester based on the results of the Lebanese baccalaureate or its equivalent.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Any student accepted in any of the programs above is eligible for the scholarship.

  • The scholarship is automatically dispensed during the first semester.

  • Starting the second semester, the scholarship shall be based on the GPA of the previous semester.

It is an initiative in which anyone outside the university can access information of all kinds, they can find topics from Architecture, Health & WellBeing, Society Culture & Human Behavior among others.

BAU journals are official publications of Beirut Arab University, currently publishing six scholarly journals that cover a wide range of disciplines, from the humanities and the social sciences to the life and physical sciences.

In addition to working with departments and faculties of the university, BAU journals serves a world-wide community of scholars, researchers, and practitioners through the publication of peer-reviewed academic and professional journals in print and electronic form.

The journals endeavor to extend the influence of the University and the academic community to influence people's lives throughout the world. Supported by Elsevier’s digital commons platform, we are expanding our reach to connect with intellectually engaged audiences across a variety of platforms and throughout academia and beyond, we look to lead the way into the future of scholarly publishing.

BAU encourages the progress of the individual at the academic and personal level, thinking about this I develop an Online Database in which there are tutorials about all possible study topics for anyone outside the university. BAU wants the Lebanese community to strengthen its skills, this service is free of charged.

Open access It is an initiative in which BAU gives free access to its libraries to the general public free of charged, the section was developed with the aim that anyone who does not belong to the university has the opportunity to read articles, books and research that allow the general public to inform themselves, BAU develops these strategies to exterminate the educational inequality and to achieve inclusive education.

Sustained economic growth cannot be achieved without social inclusion as the whole of society has a role to play in the development of a country. Federal Law No. 13 of 1972 and its amendments by the law (No.2) in 2001 was issued by the Ministry of Community Development (MOCD) as the first law to provide social benefits to members of the community to ensure and sustain the high quality of living for all Lebanon citizens.

The Ministry continues to work today on enhancing social inclusion for all members of society where social benefits are extended to cover twenty-one segments of the community.

Policies and Initiatives:

Launch of the initiative ‘Masaei Al Khair’ (2018) in collaboration with other federal government bodies, local government entities and the private sector.

The initiative aims at providing free home maintenance and renovation for the social security beneficiaries across LEBANON.

Launch of the ‘Motivation Employment Policy’ (2017), which aimed at securing employment opportunities for social security beneficiaries across the LEBANON.
